Glycerine is a very versatile compound that in its crude form is viscous and brownish in color with an average purity of 80 %. It is produced industrially from oils and fats, usually as a co-product of oleo-chemicals or biodiesel manufacturing. The source of the raw material does not affect the chemistry of the final product, but since glycerine is widely used in foods and medications, this distinction is important.

Crude glycerine can be further refined to Technical or USP grades or can be used as is in a variety of applications such as dust suppression, freeze control, waste water treatment, combustion, composting, anaerobic digestion, animal feeds, and thermo-chemical/biological conversions to value-added products.
